Myth – There is nothing I can do about junk mail or email spam. It seems as if no matter what we do, we will always get junk mail and email spam (aka junk mail via email). You could throw your hands up and say it is useless, or you can accept the fact that, yes, you WILL receive some of it, but you CAN reduce it.

Truth – You have the power to systematically put into practice proven methods for reducing the unwanted mail.

Tips for Email Spam:

• Let your software perform its magic by learning to use the automatic filing capabilities. In MS Outlook, you can automatically use the Organize function under the Tools menu to direct any unwanted email to the trash (or to be sure it really is trash, I use a folder entitled “Suspected Junk”). Any email from that source will automatically be placed where you wanted it without ever entering your inbox. You can also create Rules under the Tools menu to do similar functions.
• Create separate email addresses for different purposes. Have one for business, one for personal use and one for things like registrations, ezines, chat rooms, and so on. The last one is the one that should receive the most spam as those email lists are frequently sold.
• Consider purchasing software to get rid of your spam. Many programs can be helpful, sometimes too helpful when they screen out wanted email. Some of the more reputable names include iHateSpam found at www.iHateSpam.com and SpamKiller at www.SpamKiller.com.
